Irattai MahaLingam (Svayambu Lingam - A Lingam formed on its own (from below the ground))
In ancient times there lived a husband and wife. They lived a happy and peaceful married life. They were made for each other except for one major difference. The husband was an ardent devotee of Siva and and the wife worshipped Hari (Vishnu/Krishna) devoutly. This difference in their choice of Ishta Deivam (Personal God) led to many a quarrels on whose god is more powerful. They approached many learned men but their answers convinced either the husband or wife but not both of them.

Realizing no one could come up with a convincing answer, one day they decided to do penance to find answer to this eternal question (in Hindu tradition) themselves. They came to Sathuragiri after deciding it would be the apt place for performing penance. The husband started meditating on Siva and the wife on Hari. After many years of penance, Lord Siva appeared before the husband and asked what he wants. The husband took Lords blessings. He also called his wife and showed her Lord Siva. He boasted saying that Lord Siva is the mightiest as he answered his prayers faster than Lord Hari. The wife agitatedly looked at Lord Siva and said I wanted to meet only Lord Hari and not you. Immediately Lord Siva appeared as Lord Hari and told the couple that both Siva and Hari are not two but one and asked the couple to forget their differences. The couple realizing their folly begged for forgiveness. The Lord then appeared as SankaraNarayanan (Siva and Hari) and blessed both husband and wife. Later the Lord took the the form of Svayambu Irattai (Twin - Siva and Hari) Lingam. It is said that Irattai Lingam was worshipped by the siddha, Roma Devar.

Sundara Moorthy Swami Lingam (Anidai Lingam - A Lingam worshipped by Siddhas)
Sundara Moorthy Swami is a disciple of Sundara Mahalingam. The legend goes that once upon a time, Lord Siva was looking for a priest to perform regular puja (ceremony) at his temple. But he could not find one. So he went searching for a priest in nearby towns and villages. The Lord used to shout “Solvar Undu, Kaetpar Illai” (there is a person to say but none to listen) in every town/village he visited. In one village, a 3 year old child replies “Kaetpar Undu, Solvar Illai” (there is a person to listen but none to say). Siva hearing this knew the child is the right person to perform puja so the Lord brings the child to the hills. This child takes the name of Sundara Moorthy Swamy and grows up to be an ardent devotee of Lord Siva. It is said Sundara Moorthy Swamy is much more powerful than Sundara Mahalingam. Devotees normally pray to Sundara Moorthy & would request him to let Sundara Mahalingam know about their prayers. Lord Sundara Mahalingam would also doubly ensure that prayers routed through Sundara Moorthy Swamigal gets immediately answered. Since this lingam was worshipped by various Siddhas including Agathiyar & Sundaranandar, it belongs to Anidai type.

Sundara Mahalingam (Svayambu Lingam)
According to Hindu scriptures, Kailas is the abode of Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi (Sakthi) and Sivaganas, the crew/attendants of Lord Shiva. Yazhvalla Devar, a Sivaganam, was deeply devoted to Lord Shiva. One day he lays a lustful eye on one of the Deva Loga Apsaras. Noticing this, Lord Shiva curses both of them to be born as a human being. Realizing their mistake, they surrender at Lord Shivas feet begging for forgiveness. The Lord tells them not to worry and promises them to take them back during their lifetime. And Yazhvalla Devar took to human life in the form of Pachaimal and was born into one of the cowherd families, near Sathuragiri. His father was Thillaikon and Thilagamathi, was his mother. Being born in a cowherd family, Pachaimal made his living by selling the milk that he used to milk from the cows. After reaching the marriage age, he got married to Sadaimangai, his aunt's daughter. Husband and wife moved closed to the hills as it was be easier for the cows to find grass. As usual Pachaimal milked the cows. Sadaimangai took the milk to her in-laws house and sold them the milk.

One day Sadaimangai saw an elderly sage while she was on her way to her in-laws house to sell the milk. She took his blessings. The old sage being tired and thirsty asked Sadaimangai if it is possible for her to give him some milk. Sadaimangai not wanting to loose an opportunity to serve a sage, readily offered the milk. The sage after drinking asked whether it is possible for her to feed him daily as he had planned to stay there for some period. Sadaimangai, after pondering for a moment, agrees to it. So from the next day, she started feeding the sage and then would go to her in-laws house to sell the remaining milk.

As days went by the in-laws were confused as to the reduced milk quantity. One day they question their son, PachaiMal on the reduced supply. PachaiMal replies that it is not possible as the cows have started to yield more milk and promised them that he would look into the problem. Suspecting his wife, without her knowledge, he follows her the next day and sees his wife offering milk to the old sage. Then on her way to the in-laws house, he encounters her and in a fit of rage he slaps and abuses his wife. The abused wife runs to the sage and tells him the whole abuse episode. The sage said, "You are a good woman. You should not be punished for feeding me." and blesses her to be a Sadathari, one of the NavaSakthis. Then he moves away from that place.

The husband, finding that his wife has attained divinity repents his action. Dejected with life, he goes to Sathuragiri top and establishes a cow shed and serves milk to the the saints and sages. One of the sages to whom he provided milk was Siddha Sundaranandar. As days went by, one day a new sage came to Sathuragiri. He was welcomed by all the sages and Siddhas including Sundaranandar and Sattai Muni. Pachaimal too took his blessings. Next day Pachaimal went to the shed to milk the cows and was shocked to see the new sage drinking milk directly from one of the cows, whose milk was used to perform abhishekam. With a fit of anger he threw a stick at the new sage. This causes an injury in the forehead of the new sage. Seeing this Sundranandar and Sattai Muni wanted to curse Pachaimal. At that time the new sage asks siddhas not to curse Pachaimal and appears as Siva. Realizing his folly Pachaimal begs forgiveness. Lord blesses Pachaimal and tell him about his life purpose and takes him back to Kailas. Even now the Sundara Mahalingam in Sathuragiri bears the hurt mark.

Santhana Mahalingam (Deva Lingam - A Lingam worshipped by Gods or Celestial beings)
Once in Kailas, Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi (Sakthi) were blessing visitors who had come there to pay their respect. Visitors included Holymen, Saints, Rishis, Devas, Siddhas etc. Everyone offered their respect by going round (Pradakshinam) the Lord and the Goddess. And Bringi Maharishi was one amongst the holymen who had come to Kailas to pay his respect. He prayed to Lord Siva and paid his respect by going round (pradakshinam) Lord Siva only. He thus ignored Goddess Parvati. This act confused Goddess and she questioned Lord Siva as to why was she slighted by Bringi Maharishi when everyone else treated her equally with the Lord. Lord Siva explained that those who have renounced the material world and think only about "Moksha" would always pray to him and at the end would join him and those who wish to enjoy material things would worship her and enjoy everything in life. Bringi Maharishi prayed to me as he wanted only Moksha and everyone else wanted to enjoy the material world so they worshipped both of us. On hearing this, Goddess Parvati became furious and turned to Bringi Maharishi and said how come being a Rishi you could forget that we both are not two but one and added that "if no Sakthi there is no Sivam and if no Sivam there is no Sakthi". Goddess cursed the Maharishi that he would lose all his flesh (flesh is one form of Sakthi (energy)) as she felt he had insulted her knowingly. Maharishi willingly obliged and shed all his flesh. After losing all the flesh (energy) he was not able to stand up and he was struggling to move. Seeing the plight of his devotee Lord Siva gives him a special staff. With the help of the staff, Maharishi starts to walk again.

This act of the Lord further infuriated the Goddess. She feels that she was insulted twice, once by the sage and then by the Lord by providing staff to the sage. After thinking for some time, she realized that such incident would not have occurred had she had been one half of the Lord Siva. She feels that the Ardhanareeswarar form (Male-Half and Female-Half) would ensure that everyone treats both God and Goddess equally. To appease the Lord, so that she achieves her goal, she comes to Sathuragiri hills to do penance (it is said in the month of Purattasi (Sep-Oct)). She choses a place under a huge Santhana (Sandal) Tree to do her penance. During that period Sathuragiri was going through a severe drought for almost 12 years. But due to the presence of Goddess Parvati the whole place gets back its greenery. Though the place was full of Munis, Sages, Siddhars and other holy men, they let the drought as it is as they did not want to come in the way of the nature. This sudden transformation made the Munis, Siddhars and others to wonder on who could have done this.

On seeing the Goddess, the Munis received her by paying their respects and enquired the reason for penance. Goddess told the whole story and also explained the Vradh/Viradham (Kedhareswara Viradham) that she would undergo. On hearing the story, the holymen arranged everything and Goddess Parvathi made a Prathishtanam of Linga with Sandalwood Paste (Hence it is called Santhana (Sandal's Tamil equivalent) Mahalingam. Goddess also created Agaya Gangai theertham (stream, still flowing) & used to bath in the theertham before doing Puja to the Lingam. Goddess did severe penance on Lord Siva. Lord Siva satisfied with Goddesses penance appears on his "Rishaba Vahana" and accepts Goddesses demands and offers his left portion of his body. On their return Lord Siva proclaimed that since the Siva Lingam was worshipped by Parvathi Devi, it should be worshipped only by Maharishis only and those who wish for "Kamya Loka" should not do pooja to the lingam. And if they do so, they may stand to hate "Ishta Kamya Loka" and will become "Moksha Desired" person and ultimately join him. Lord Siva blessed everybody and went away. After that, Satta Natha Muni worshipped the "Santhana Lingam" and "Chanangi Muni" followed suit.

Anandavalli Amma
Anandavalli Amma was born near Sathuragiri, some 300–400 years ago, into a family of Saliya Maharishi Gothram. She was spiritually inclined right from her young age. Right from her childhood days, she used to a hear a lot about Sathuragiri hills. This made a major impact in her and being a spiritually inclined person, she left for the hills to do penance. But being a woman, she was asked to leave the hills, by the rishis and siddhars as they deemed the hills would be unsafe for a woman. She begged and cried but the sages were unrelenting. So she went back to the foot hills and did severe penance. This made her accumulate lots of siddhis. One day the Lord fully satisfied with her penance appeared before her and directed her to the hills and to bless devotees from there. Anandavalli Amma's temple mandapam can be found behind Sundara Mahalingam temple. Anandavalli Amma is formless. Only during Navarathiri she takes a form. There are two festivals in honour of Amma. The first one falls in the Tamil month of Purattasi and the second one during Navarathiri.

Thirumoolar’s Siva Yoga

Many people wrote in the comments as well as in emails that they were looking for experiences similar to what I described in this article. I am compelled to post this update after I read Mr. Rajendrakumar’s unfortunate personal experience (see comments section) from practicing the mantra on this page without proper guidance. This article was written with the intention of sharing my experience only, but it was never my intention that it would be taken as a technique (I never gave the steps of using the mantra in this page). I did not write this article lightly. I deliberated putting this on my site for more than three months and put it up only after inner push. Also, note that this experience was more than couple of years old from the date of publication of this article. My only intention in writing this article was to express that the Siddhars are available on the inner planes if we need help. If you really want the proper technique of chanting the mantra, you need to go to http://www.SivaYoga.com/ and get it from them.

One size does not fit all. Not all techniques are for everybody. If you really want, try a technique for short periods of time (like, 5 minutes per day) for about three days. If the technique is not pleasant and give you joy, but causes distress, then the technique is not for you.

Please also note that if you are chanting mantra or doing a technique with an intention of having a particular spiritual experience, then that desire may be coming from ego which could cause physical and mental distress. You need to approach any technique with humility and surrender to the divine and let the divine give you whatever experience you need to grow.

Bhakthi or Surrender to the Divine is important. May be your first practice should be just that — Surrender to your favorite form of the divine. If you need to do a specific technique, you will be guided to it and you will not feel the conflicts created by ego at that point. This was the case with me.

Listen to your inner longing (this is not the ego’s desire to have an experience and feel good). Just because someone else is doing it or someone had some experience and you want to reproduce that experience, is the wrong approach. Having spiritual experiences is not the goal. Experiences occur on their own accord depending on what each person needs to learn and gain wisdom. You can derive inspiration from others experiences, but not try to replicate them.

Develop Self-love and Self-acceptance. When you develop these two, things will appear to you as needed for your evolution and you will not face any issues with your practice. With Self-love and Self-acceptance, you will also gain the wisdom of love and acceptance for others.

Be gentle with yourself. Treat your body/mind temple as you would treat a temple you visit — with love and devotion. If you are feeling uncomfortable and sick, then body is telling you to just stop. No guilt needed. Just stop.

In February 2005, I took initiation into Level-1 of Babaji’s Kriya Yoga and in April 2005, into Level-2. In Level-2, we were given a list of names of siddhas (meaning, “perfected beings”) and deities—all are infinite intelligences—and we were told the qualities of each intelligence. We were asked to choose based on what resonated with us and what qualities we wanted to invoke within ourselves, at that time. We got initiated into one mantra of our choice from that list. When they described the list, one of the descriptions was about siddhar tirumUlar (from now on I will use the more popular spelling and form, “Thirumoolar”). However, I did not take that mantra at that time, instead I got attracted to the mantra of Lord Muruga (also known as, skanda, kArtikEya, kumara, sanat kumara and subramanya). He is also known as, “The Lord of Siddhas.”

Few months passed. Around early June 2005, I happened to be at my friend’s (he is also my music teacher) place, as he was giving a lecture-demonstration on Ayurvedic cooking. (yummy!) When we were all eating, he started talking to somebody and I happened to be nearby. I overheard him talk about how he got a message from Thirumoolar to do an internet search for a certain, “51 syllable Siva mantra,” so he can practice and teach to his music students. He had not started to teach that mantra, yet. This time, I strangely got attracted to the name “Siddhar Thirumoolar.” But, I did not ask about it. I felt, if I needed it, I would surely get it somehow. After that I forgot about it completely.

A couple of days later, I started to get this urge to find this mantra. I thought that I was just making it up. So, I ignored it. I kept getting this thought constantly. One week passed. I was just seeing, if that was just a random thought and would pass. But, it was not, and I could not resist it any longer. So, I googled, the terms, “51 syllable Siva mantra Thirumoolar.” The first site that popped up was, Thirumoolar’s Siva Yoga site. Here, I found the following mantra (also available in Tirumandiram (Vol 2, Verse 946)):
Om
Si va ya na ma
ya na va Si ma
ma va ya na Si
Si ya na ma va
va Si ma ya na
Om

Aakash tablet goes on sale for Rs 2500 online

Aakash tablet goes on sale for Rs 2500 online

DataWind, the Canadian company that is manufacturing Aakash, has started the online booking and pre booking of the much anticipated low cost Android tablet. Online booking is for students' version of the tablet and pre booking is for UbiSlate 7, the upgraded version of Aakash.

Students' version of Aakash will be available for Rs 2,500 and will be delivered in seven days. The commercial version, UbiSlate 7 is priced at Rs 2,999. The payment mode for both the tablets is cash on delivery.

The commercial version of Aakash tablet will be powered by Android 2.3 and will have a resistive touchscreen, Cortex A8-700 MHz processor and graphics accelerator HD video processor, 256 MB of RAM and 2 GB of internal memory.

Other specifications are a one standard USB port, 3.5 mm audio jack, a 7 inch display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, resistive touchscreen, GPRS and WiFi support.

"The improved version of Aakash tablet will be available in retail outlets by January end," a spokesperson of DataWind told The Mobile Indian.

The tablet was to be made available in retail stores by the end of November. "The delay in the availability of the tablet has been due to upgradation in the tablet and some unforeseen delay in manufacturing," the spokesperson said.

To book and prebook student and commercial versions respectively of Aakash tablet, users have to visit DataWind's website and fill up the required form. In case of booking they will get a booking ID and a message which will state, "You will shortly receive an email confirmation from our support team with further details."

In case of pre booking users will get a confirmation message which will state, "The commercial version of the Akash UbiSlate 7 would be launched in early weeks of December. After the commercial launch we would get in touch with you to deliver your device as soon possible."

As a matter of fact, the confirmation message a reader will see is factually incorrect as The mobile Indian had reported earlier the Aakash tablet will be available only by January end.

Datawind has however not cleared how it is going to establish the identity of students who will book the cheapest version of Aakash tablet. When The Mobile Indian contacted spokesperson of Datwind he said, "Anyone can book the student version of Aakash tablet."

This defeats the purpose of providing students an affordable tablet as now anyone can place an order to get the tablet. Interestingly, now it has been revealed that the government has procured only 10,000 Aakash tablets for distribution in schools and colleges of the initial 1 lakh proposed.

It looks like the company was in a hurry to start the online booking process and has not done not proper homework before staring it.

Uses of Akash Mudra

It creates space inside you. You don’t have space when you are stuck in a traffic jam (what’s inside us is reflected outside us). Put both the Chin and Akash (space) Mudras (let the index and middle fingers touch the tip of the thumb in both the hands). Then we will have space and move.

Akash Mudra activates our own teacher inside us.

If anybody is selfish, you can ask them, “Please put this Mudra”. It will make him broad-minded.

It widens your views and helps to understand your life better.

This also helps to clears the throat.

The healing power of water

The healing power of water

The fact that water has a high value in healing seems to be a knowledge that has gone missing in our day and age of sodas and coffee. Correct intake of water can cure many problems so lets take a closer look at water.

Some facts about water
Water is of major importance to all living things; in some organisms, up to 90 percent of their body weight comes from water. Up to 60 percent of the human body is water, the brain is composed of 70 percent water, blood is 82 percent water, and the lungs are nearly 90 percent water.
The unique qualities and properties of water are what make it so important and basic to life. The cells in our bodies are full of water. The excellent ability of water to dissolve so many substances allows our cells to use valuable nutrients, minerals, and chemicals in biological processes. Water's "stickiness" (from surface tension) plays a part in our body's ability to transport these elements all through ourselves. The carbohydrates and proteins that our bodies use as food are metabolised and transported by water in the bloodstream. No less important is the ability of water to transport waste material out of our bodies.

You definitely need it
Your body consists of a lot of water. Just imagine if you drained away the water in your body, not much left is there? It is easy to see that your body needs water and it needs a lot. Drink water and your body will respond positively, on the other hand if you do not drink enough your body will start to move water from less essential systems to more vital systems. Question is what systems in your body would you would classify as less vital? 75% of your brain tissue consists of water and your brain runs 7 days per week and 24 hours per day. Your brain needs water more than any other organ since your whole system depends on a functioning brain. When starting to drink more water one of the first things you will notice is that your will feel more "clear".

Water an effective medicine
Water is nature's most effective medicine because it is essential for cleaning and removing toxins from the body. When your body does not get enough water it cannot remove toxins and problems start occurring. When you are under stress, growth or any other kind of change including healing, your body will produce chemicals and other waste that need to be removed from your system. If you think about it most types of healing suggests that you drink water after a session, I wonder why?! Water will remove waste through your lungs, skin (sweat), urine and faeces. Enough water will mean that your system will effectively remove toxins and help keeping you healthy.

Drink enough and stay healthy
It is recommended that you drink at least eight glasses of eight ounces water per day (8 glasses of 2,5dl). If you are in warmer climates you might need to drink up to twice that amount. Give your body the water it needs to function properly and you will find that just drinking more water can actually solve many problems. Water is known to have an effect on diverse diseases like: angina, arthritis, asthma, back problems, depression, diabetes, excess weight, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, migraine, MS (multiple sclerosis) just to mention a few.

Not just any fluid
In most countries tap water is contaminated or not really fit for drinking, in such cases you need to install a water purifier. If possible drink good quality bottled water. Remember just because it is wet does not mean it is water! Coffee, tea, beer, soda, juice etc. all contain dehydrating agents, you might actually lose more fluid than you take in. Stick to water!

It is never too late for water
You can never drink too much water (but as with anything else don't overdo it), water will help your system to clear itself of toxins and make you feel better. Remember that starting a new habit of drinking water properly will not overnight create results. Your problems may have taken time to develop, therefore it will also take time to cure them.

Reiki and water
Naturallyyou can use Reiki to improve the healing powers of the water you drink. Hold your hands around the glass of water you are about to drink and let Reiki flow. If you have Reiki II you can use the symbols to further help the process. Keep your intention on the fact that you want the water to be as pure and healthy as possible for you at this moment.

One last thing: You are not ill - your body is thirsty!

mudras and real function

Mudras

A Mudra (Sanskrit word meaning sign or seal) is a gesture or position, usually of the hands, that locks and guides energy flow and reflexes to the brain. By curling, crossing, stretching and touching the fingers and hands, we can "talk" to the body and mind as each area of the hand corresponds to a certain part of the mind or body.

From the little finger to the thumb: each finger represents earth, metal, fire, wood, and water, respectively. The entire universe lies within your ten fingers and it is also said that there is an infinite number of Mudras even though we only have 10 fingers. Mudras can be used both for meditation and/or healing.

How to do a Mudra
Mudras are easy to do and when used with Reiki you can usually feel the energy flow strongly. Start each Mudra session by "washing" your hands (rub your hands against each other about 10 times, hold hands before your Navel Chakra) this will help energy to flow in your hands. If you have Reiki II you can draw the Power symbol and the Mental/Emotional symbol over your hands (or any other symbol that you prefer). Sit with your back straight, either with legs crossed or on a straight backed chair. Put your fingers together as described in the Mudras below. In each Mudra, exert enough pressure to feel the flow of energy but not enough to whiten fingertips.

The Om Mudra
This is probably one of the most well known Mudras and is very easy to do.
How to do it:
Start by "washing" your hands as explained above, add symbols if wanted. Sit with a straight back. Create the sacred OM mudra by connecting the index finger with the thumb on the same hand (both hands). The thumb is the gateway to Divine Will (represented by the Crown Chakra) and the index finger is the Ego (represented by the Navel Chakra). As you do this Mudra you can do an affirmation or just chant OM (pronounced AUM). If doing the affirmation say to yourself when you breathe in: "I am one with the Universe" and as you breathe out "The Universe and I are one". This mudra is very good when your life is in need of peace and tranquility.

The Smiling Buddha Mudra
This is one of my favorites and you might have seen this mudra also in paintings and statues. This is a gesture and exercise of happiness as it opens the flow of energy to the heart.

How to do it:
Sit comfortably either with crossed legs or on a straight backed chair. Bend ring and little fingers, pressing them down with the thumbs, keeping index and middle fingers straight (be comfortable do not force the fingers straight), palms forward. Elbows in towards the body (as far as it feels comfortable for you) and keep a 30 degree angle between the upper arms and forearms, keep the forearms parallel to each other.

Concentrate on your Third Eye and mentally chant (at the Third Eye) Sa Ta Na Ma ("Sa" - Infinity, "Ta" - Life, Existence, "Na" - Death, "Ma" - Rebirth, Light). Can be done without the chant but try to at least concentrate on your Third Eye.

Keep elbows in towards your body and your chest out (straight back). Continue for about 10 minutes, then inhale deeply, exhale, open and close the fists several times, and relax. Enjoy the experience!
Fight worry, depression, impatience, anger, fear and other emotions

I don't know if this can be called a Mudra as it is a Qi Gong exercise that I learnt a long time ago. The effects and technique are certainly similar. This Mudra can be done anywhere as there is no preparation needed and it can be done discreetly.

As mentioned above your fingers corresponds to the five elements but they also correspond to emotions and the major organs. On the outside and inside (not top and bottom!) of your fingers run the meridians and there are several acupuncture points located here. These are represented by the black dots on the first picture.

By pressing or squeezing the sides of the fingers, according to your needs, you can affect both the emotion and the corresponding organ. This is how the fingers work:
The thumb represents the element earth, the stomach and worry.
The index finger represents the element metal, the lungs, the large intestine and the emotions depression, sadness and grief.
The middle finger is the element fire, the heart, small intestine, circulatory and respiratory systems, the emotions are impatience and hastiness.
The ring finger is the element wood and is connected to the liver, gall bladder, nervous system and corresponds to anger.
The little finger corresponds to water, the kidneys and fear.

So if you are overwhelmed by an emotion, just squeeze the corresponding finger a few times and you will feel better. It works!
